IBM Silk Routes: Strengthening cooperation in border management

17 April 2024

Iraq

The ICMPD team from the Regional Office Silk Routes visited Baghdad for a round of high-level bilateral meetings and events. On 15 April, a meeting was held with the Ministry of Interior, one of the key partners for ICMPD in Iraq, focusing on enhancing the ongoing cooperation, particularly within the framework of border management initiatives.

Participating in the meeting were the Minister’s Advisor on training, the Director General for International Cooperation, the Director General for Training and Qualification, and the Director General of Civil Status, Passport and Residence (PRD).

During the meeting, Mr. Enrico Ragaglia, Regional Portfolio Manager, officially handed over specialised document examination equipment procured under the European Union-funded project "Integrated Border Management in the Silk Routes countries". This equipment, including UV lights, portable magnifiers, and digital microscopes, aims to enhance the capabilities of frontline officers of the Ministry of Interior working at the international airports in Iraq. The ceremony took place in the modern training room dedicated to document security at the Headquarters of PRD, which was recently refurbished by ICMPD with the support of the project.

ICMPD has been actively supporting the Ministry of Interior in various capacities, including capacity-building programmes, training initiatives, and the development of the National Integrated Border Management Strategy. As the partnership between ICMPD and the Ministry of Interior continues to evolve, efforts are underway to establish risk analysis units and provide operational equipment for the Border Force. The meeting and the ceremony of the equipment handover symbolise the joint commitment to strengthening border management capabilities in Iraq.
