On 14-15 April 2024, a workshop on International Cooperation was convened in collaboration with the European Union Advisory Mission to Iraq (EUAM-I) and the National Security Advisory of Iraq within the framework of Iraq's National Integrated Border Management (IBM) Strategy in Baghdad.

This event brought together key stakeholders from Iraq and the international community to delve into one of the critical aspects of border management, such as international cooperation. It was organised within the efforts undertaken under the EU-funded project on 'Integrated Border Management in the Silk Routes Countries,' which aims to support Iraq in developing and implementing its National IBM Strategy and Action Plan.

Over the course of two days, participants engaged in multidimensional discussions, exchanged best practices, and explored avenues for enhancing international cooperation in border management. The workshop aimed to foster collaborative approaches for international cooperation in Iraq's Integrated Border Management, introducing best practices and operational platforms while facilitating information sharing and cooperation venues among Iraqi and international stakeholders.

The agenda featured presentations from Iraqi ministries and agencies responsible for border management (including the Ministry of Interior, Border Force, and Border Port Commission), providing valuable insights into current international partnerships, needs, and plans. Sessions led by EUAM-I and Frontex shed light on European good practices in international cooperation and methods for forging effective partnerships.

The working sessions allowed for a deeper dive into the Iraqi national standards of the information exchange and coordination of international cooperation at the national level, as well as mapping of the international for relevance to the Iraqi border authorities. The momentum generated during this meeting will pave the way for continued efforts to strengthen Iraq's border management capabilities and contribute to regional and global security.
