Complementary pathways
Complementary pathways to protection encompass multiple migration channels for people in need of protection, ranging from work and study opportunities to family reunification and humanitarian admission programmes. Designed to complement refugee resettlement (the traditional third-country solution for refugees), these pathways are garnering attention as innovative solutions against the backdrop of increasing, and often protracted, displacement. While complementary pathways offer considerable potential, they currently remain limited in their scope and scale. ICMPD’s Policy Unit is exploring possibilities to expand complementary pathways to protection in Europe, with a focus on work-related opportunities.
