26 November 2024

Austria

From 11 to 13 November 2024, a study visit for Georgian Young Ambassadors was held in Vienna, Austria, at the headquarters of the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD). This event, organised under the EU-funded STREAMinG Phase 2 project, aimed to strengthen the Ambassadors' knowledge and skills in key areas such as migration and citizenship, migration and development, diaspora engagement, and integration.

The programme featured interactive sessions and discussions designed to introduce participants to European policies on migration, asylum, and integration. Highlights included a comprehensive presentation on the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum and an engaging session on integration and citizenship policies. The Young Ambassadors also benefited from discussions with ICMPD professionals, who shared their expertise on navigating the challenges and opportunities within the global migration landscape.

As part of the visit, diaspora engagement was a key focus area. Participants explored the critical role of diasporas during crises, drawing on case studies from Ukraine. These discussions provided valuable insights into ICMPD's contributions to crisis response and the involvement of the Georgian diaspora in similar situations. One of the most inspiring moments of the visit was the interaction with representatives of the African Diaspora Youth Forum in Europe (ADYFE). This session highlighted the impactful role of diaspora youth in shaping migration policies and supporting their communities.

The visit also included a guided tour of the United Nations Office in Vienna, offering participants a closer look at how Vienna-based UN agencies contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Georgia’s Young Ambassadors programme is ICMPD’s flagship initiative implemented in close cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The programme plays a pivotal role in representing Georgia abroad, promoting positive image of the country through action plans implemented by the programme participants, including cultural and networking events in the destination countries.
