On 28-29 November 2023, the Anti-Trafficking Programme (ATP) of ICMPD organised a training on managing shelters for trafficked persons, case management, and cooperation of shelters. The training took place in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire and participating organisations came from Benin, Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Nigeria, and Togo.
The training “Shelter Management, Case Management and Trauma Informed Practice-Developing Responses to Protect Victims of Human Trafficking” has been developed in consultation with Expertise France as well as the attending organisations. It was informed by the “Training Needs Assessment” of civil society organisations working with victims of trafficking in the six Gulf of Guinea countries, and was carried out by the Anti-Trafficking-Programme earlier in 2023.
The content was covered through four interconnected workshops, with each topic building on the knowledge and skills developed in the preceding workshop:
1) Human Trafficking, Indicators, and Identification;
2) Guidelines and Quality of Care in Shelter Management;
3) Case Management; and
4) Trauma Informed Direct Intervention.
At the end of this comprehensive training programme, the participants have acquired a deeper understanding of human trafficking, gained critical skills for direct intervention, and learned best practices for case management. Close to 30 participants attended from the six Gulf of Guinea countries.
The training was carried out in cooperation with Expertise France in the framework of their Project to support the fight against human trafficking in Gulf of Guinea countries. ICMPD through ATP supports the implementation of Component 4 of the Project that aims to boost cross-border cooperation and implement cooperation measures in accordance with the existing bilateral and regional agreements.
