ICAT holds event dedicated to the vulnerability factors fuelling trafficking in persons among migrants

ICMPD and UNODC as 2022 Co-Chairs of The Inter-Agency Coordination Group against Trafficking in Persons (ICAT) hold the online event “Vulnerability to Trafficking in mixed migration contexts - Community Perspectives and current approaches”.

The side event is organised at the margins of the International Migration Review Forum 2022 in order to present the work carried out by ICAT on the question of vulnerability to TIP. It also provides a platform to practitioners and community-based organisations to discuss the impact of current approaches aiming at determining and addressing migrants’ vulnerability to TIP and identifying best practices and innovative solutions towards enhanced impact.

Vulnerabilities fuelling TIP affect migrants at all stages of migration. Erosion of the rule of law, widespread criminality, poverty, unemployment, systemic inequality, gender inequality, discrimination, marginalization, corruption, as well as climate induced natural disasters, may all be factors contributing to someone’s decision to migrate.

Against this background, the event aims to:

• Take stock of current practices that seek to identify and address vulnerability of migrants to trafficking in persons.
• Foster a critical reflection on the impact of current approaches and practices towards addressing vulnerabilities.
• Propose innovative solutions to address vulnerability of migrants to trafficking in persons.
• Launch ICAT’s latest Issue Brief entitled “Addressing vulnerability to Trafficking in Human Beings”.

The event is moderated by Professor Felipe Gonzalez Morales, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants.
